I'm trying to use the ag8453 driver with my Agilent 8453 UV-VIS, but I am unable to communicate with the instrument. I'm using LabView 7.0 and I have the device drivers (including NI-VISA 3.0 and NI488.2 V1.74) loaded to this machine. I downloaded the zip file from NI.com that is specifically for version 7.0 of LabView. The instrument is connected to the PC through a GPIB cable to a card that came with the computer (the computer came with the instrument). The Agilent ChemStation software that normally runs this instrument is able to commnuicate fine, so I know the connection is good. From ag8453.lib I'm running 'AG8453 Test Component Example.vi'. The VISA resourse name in the front panel reads 'GPIB0::25::INSTRT'. The GPIB address switch setting on the rear of the instrumnet is set to address 25 and according to the Agilent 8453 installation guide, the VISA interface name is 'GPIB0', so I think the resourse name is correct. The error I get says the following.
I was indeed using an HP GPIB card (82341), and I think this is problematic. In the end, I gave up using the GPIB interface and configured the instrument to run through a LAN connection. This is a little tricky, but Agilent provides instructions in their 8453 installation guide. Once I got it working through the ethernet cable with their software (ChemStation), making the Labview drivers work is fairly straightforward.

The main thing to keep in mind here is that the VISA Resource name may need to be changed from its GPIB default to read 'TCPIP::IP address::9100: OCKET', and they explain this in the readme that comes with the instrument drivers and also in the context help within the block diagram if you scroll over the AG8453 Initialize.vi.
